Abstract

The research focused on analyzing the mental health of young people aged 16 to 24 in Slovenia. The aim was to assess the current state of mental health in this age group, including the prevalence of diagnosed mental disorders, self-reported difficulties, and risky behaviors. We also examined subjective assessments of life satisfaction, mental and physical health, and psychological flourishing, which highlight the positive aspects of young people’s well-being. Special attention was given to identifying key risk and protective factors, as well as the use of mental health services and sources of support. The study further included an analysis of adverse and positive childhood and adolescent experiences, personal concerns, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the perceived influence of current global crises on youth mental health. Based on the findings, we developed recommendations for both preventive and curative measures.

The project contributed to a better understanding and treatment of youth mental health in Slovenia. By emphasizing subjective indicators of mental health, the research provided a more comprehensive picture of the situation and the factors shaping it. The results are relevant not only for the academic community, but also for policymakers and professionals in the fields of mental health, education, and social work, as they support the planning and implementation of measures tailored to the needs of young people.
