Abstract
The project examines how foreign direct investment (FDI) has shaped the development trajectories of Hungary and Slovenia over the past two decades and how it may influence their future in an era defined by sustainability transitions, digital transformation, and geopolitical uncertainty. By comparing two small EU economies with distinct investment patterns and policy approaches, the research investigates how FDI affects economic growth, competitiveness, and integration into global value chains, while also assessing the role of national strategies in amplifying or constraining these effects.
The project analyzes the dynamics of inward and outward FDI, tests and refines investment theory, maps the rise of domestic multinationals, and explores the internationalization of technology startups as emerging drivers of innovation. It further evaluates industrial policies in both countries, particularly in relation to green and Industry 4.0 transitions, offering evidence-based recommendations for more effective policy mixes.
Its findings will support policymakers, businesses, and researchers by clarifying how FDI can contribute to sustainable and innovation‑led development in Central and Eastern Europe. By fostering collaboration between Slovenian, Hungarian, and broader Visegrád research communities, and by engaging stakeholders through workshops and public‑facing outputs, the project strengthens regional knowledge exchange and enhances understanding of how small, open economies can navigate global economic shifts.
