Green Urban Communities of the Future

Abstract

The large-scale interdisciplinary project of the University of Ljubljana (UL) 'Green Urban Communities of the Future' is focused on innovations that address sustainable energy, water and food management in urban environments for their effective green transformation.

In the first (preparatory) phase of the project between 1 November 2024 and 31 October 2025, the project partners are testing new concepts (i.e. potential interdisciplinary breakthroughs) by conducting preliminary interdisciplinary research. The consortium includes the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana (project coordinator), the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana, the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Ljubljana and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ljubljana. In the second phase, cooperation with the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia is also planned.

Seven breakthrough ideas related to ensuring renewable and sustainable sources of energy, water and food security are foreseen:

connecting green areas and advanced solar technologies,
storing electricity with recycled battery systems,
cavitation-laser cleaning of membranes for membrane water distillation,
swarms of autonomous robotic tillers for smart soil cultivation,
water as a lubricant - machinery for working in nature,
hybrid desorption systems for obtaining water from the atmosphere and
assessment of social readiness for innovations aimed at green transition.
