Abstract

The goal of the Urban Education Live (UEL) is to spark collaboration between universities and urban communities. We achieve this goal by developing local skills and knowledge that benefit communities AND the learning process of students. The work in urban communities is supported by a new kind of social mapping, discovering what people find either valuable or problematic in their own everyday surroundings. Based on these findings the project will establish Local Hubs for learning and doing that enable citizens to improve their neighbourhood and work together with city authorities and companies. Project Consortium: University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences, Centre for Spatial Sociology (CSS) School of Architecture, Tampere University of Technology (TUT) School of Architecture, The University of Sheffield (SSoA) Urban Transition Association (ATU), Bukarešta Institute for Policies of Space (IPOP) Ljubljana Group of inovative small and medium enterprises (SME), Tekes, Finland City of Salo, Finland City of Tampere, Hiedanranta project, Finland Project web page: https://urbedu.live/

The phases of the project and their realization

A) The Center for Spatial Sociology (Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana) successfully completed all foreseen research / work activities for the year 2017 and 2018 - according to the work program schedule delineated in the document “ERA-NET Cofund Smart Urban Futures - Consortium, General and Financial Information”. The main goal (“deliverable”) in 2018 for the University of Ljubljana was the creation of the document “UEL-State of the Art” for the entire Urban Education Live Consortium (“UEL”). We have developed the “UEL - State of the art” document, which provides an overview of the key research approaches, strategies and methodologies - deriving from UEL consortium partners’ past projects (University of Sheffield, University of Ljubljana, IpoP, Tampere University of Technology, Urban Transition Association). The mentioned research implications from the “State of the art” will be at applied / implemented in our current UEL projects. The “UEL-State of the art” includes common research references and standards that enable the process of research interactions and synergies between UEL partners. B) In April 2018, we started the initial phase of the UEL project’s “local activities”, focusing primarily on “social mapping” activities in specific local urban areas. University of Ljubljana (Faculty of Social Sciences, Centre for Spatial Sociology) and the organization IPoP initiated a research process with social mapping activities in the Tobačna factory in Ljubljana. The social mapping process within the project “Tobačna community” consists of 3 phases: 1. phase (April 2018 - August 2018): first set of interviews with 30 stakeholders, who work in Tobačna area, in order to get a detailed overview of the strength / origin / quality of the existing social network in Tobačna factory.-The first step / phase is concluded. 2. phase (May 2018 - January 2020): performing different local activities (social events), which could potentially empower the local stakeholders’ community and strengthen the ties between the people working in Tobačna area (community building process). 3. phase (January 2020 - March 2020): second set of interviews with same stakeholders and with same questionnaires as performed within the first step. The longitudinal analysis (1-3 step) is essential to understand if the social network between different stakeholders in Tobačna factory strengthened and / or expanded in the period of 18 months. We are going to explore and evaluate if the social activities performed during the observed period will somehow influence / will have an impact on the Tobačna’s local social network. C) A number of other activities project activities are carried out simultaneously – e.g. networking with other stakeholders in the project, preparation of scientific publications and other activities related to the implementation of the project.
