The call for applications for the next academic year is expected to be published in the beginning of March and a first application period ends in early June.

The call will be published on our website. Candidates must apply online via the eVŠ portal, where they must also submit all required documents – see the list of required documents in How to apply - STEP 5 and 6.  The candidate must submit a short doctoral disposition (1000 words) and obtain the approval of their supervisor.

Candidates must complete and submit by the stated application deadlines their application for enrolment in the doctoral programme and all required evidence electronically via the eVŠ information system.

Enrolment will be completed by the end of September at the latest, at the member faculty that coordinates the field in question.

Information day is usually held in May in two time slots (one in person and one via Zoom).

For the academic year 2024/25 the Information day will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

The doctoral programme in the Humanities and Social Sciences is open to:

• Graduates of Bologna Master’s study programmes.
• Graduates of study programmes leading to university a degree.
• Graduates of study programmes leading to a specialisation, following a previously completed higher education study programme; upon the proposal of a field coordinator responsible for the doctoral programme, a competent body of a member faculty determines study obligations worth 30 to 60 ECTS needed for enrolment in the third level doctoral programme.
• Graduates of study programmes leading to a masters degree or a specialisation following the completion of a first degree; upon the proposal of a field coordinator responsible for the doctoral programme, a competent body of a member faculty acknowledges study obligations to the value of at least 60 ECTS, thus enabling enrolment in a third level doctoral programme.

Students who finished equivalent education abroad meet the conditions for enrolment in doctoral study. Equivalence of formerly obtained education abroad is ascertained through the process of verification of foreign education, in compliance with Article 121 of the Statute of the University of Ljubljana.

Before registration it is necessary to get the supervisor's agreement.

Your previous study will be assessed in the procedure for recognition of foreign higher education credentials or diplomas.

Criteria for selection of students

Criteria for applicants' selection in the case of enrolment restrictions:

• grade point average in previous studies - 50%;
• oral exam/interview taken in front of an expert committee for the study field the candidate is applying for, accounts for the second 50%.

Upon the approval of the coordinator, an appropriate faculty member responsible for the doctoral study decides the applicant's suitability.

Fee per programme (all 4 years): 10.600,00 €

Fee per study year:

• 1st year: 3.400 €,
• 2nd year: 2.600 €,
• 3rd year: 2.200 €,
• 4th year: 2.400 €

Admitted students sign a contract and pay the first year's tuition fees. Students pay the tuition fees for the second, third and fourth years when they are promoted to the next year. Tuition fees for each academic year can be paid in three instalments.

 

Co-funding

The Decree on the co-funding of doctoral studies (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 22/17 and 105/20) and act amending the Higher Education Act regulate the co-funding of officially recognised doctoral study programmes.

Tuition fee co-funding will be granted to students meeting the following requirements:

• they are enrolled in the 1st year of doctoral studies and have an average grade of completed education of at least 8.00 out of 10.00 (taking into account the grades of all accredited study obligations at the study programmes completed so far)

Knowledge of Slovenian language is not a requirement for co-funding and neither is Slovenian citizenship.

The student chooses the external elective subject in agreement with the supervisor upon enrolment in the second year of the doctoral programme.

The external elective course may be:

• a course from another field within the interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Humanities and Social Sciences (course syllabi),
• a course accredited in other third-level study programmes at other faculties or universities – at home or abroad,
• a course from the UL generic skills and competences base,
• an individual course: to apply, a Course Syllabus Form must be submitted and completed by the course provider – the course must be approved by the Committee for Doctoral Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences,
• course(s) from the summer school evaluated with credit points, e.g.:

A student wishing to obtain a doctorate of science degree from the faculty shall submit an application for the registration of the doctoral dissertation topic to the Committee for Doctoral Studies (CDS).

The registration of doctoral dissertation topic must include:

1. application in which the student:
   • applies for the approval of the doctoral dissertation topic registration;
   • suggests a field in which they would like to obtain the title of doctor;
   • proposes a potential supervisor with or without a co-supervisor of the doctoral dissertation;
   • submits 3-5 references of a potential supervisor and a potential co-supervisor in the field of the doctoral dissertation topic in the last 5 years;
   • may apply to write in the English language;
   • may apply to write the dissertation based on original scientific articles;
   • gives consent or certificate of submission of the application to the Ethics Commission in the FSS field of research or other relevant commissions when the nature of the doctoral dissertation topic so requires;
   • submits a research data management plan;
2. candidate's curriculum vitae with an emphasis on their work in the research field (professional curriculum vitae);
3. a list of published scientific and other professional works (bibliography);
4. doctoral dissertation proposal;
5. implementation plan that corresponds to the doctoral dissertation proposal and that realistically defines the time frame for researching and writing the doctoral dissertation.

All necessary documentation for accepting the doctoral dissertation topic must be written in the Slovenian language. A doctoral candidate may apply to write a dissertation in English provided they are a foreigner, the doctoral candidate's supervisor or co-supervisor are foreigners, a foreigner is a member of the DSC or if the doctoral dissertation consists of original scientific articles published in English.

Prior to consideration by the CDS, the proposed supervisor and possible co-supervisor and field coordinator shall be obliged to confirm their agreement with the submitted topic and the doctoral dissertation proposal by signing the same.

A candidate shall submit the application and doctoral dissertation proposal in electronic form to the Student Affairs office (doctoral.studies@fdv.uni-lj.si). If the doctoral dissertation proposal is not written and edited in accordance with the Guidelines for writing and editing professional and scientific works at FSS, the Student Affairs office shall reject it.

A student may submit a doctoral dissertation topic for assessment in the same study field of the doctoral study programme by the time of the submission of the doctoral dissertation for assessment no more than twice. A student can re-submit an application for a new topic or an updated topic that they have submitted initially.

The doctoral dissertation proposal shall include:

• proposed dissertation title in Slovene and English;
• scientific field of the doctoral dissertation topic;
• a brief description of the content that the student will deal with;
• a precise definition of the research problem encompassing:
  • a brief overview of the specific research field and a presentation of previous research in the field of the topic and the purpose of the research;
  • clearly presented hypotheses or research questions with a brief explanation;
  • the research concept and a description of the research methods;
  • the definition of expected results and the original contribution to science;
  • brief structure of the doctoral dissertation in the form of an index of content;
  • a list of relevant references from the field of the dissertation topic.

 

The doctoral dissertation proposal shall be written and edited in accordance with the Guidelines for writing and editing professional and scientific works at FSS and encompass 3 to 7 pages of text (excluding sources, the structure of the dissertation in the form of an index of content).

A doctoral candidate has up to 20 minutes for the presentation of a doctoral disposition, using various multimedia techniques.

Members of the Committee for monitoring the progress of a doctoral student may pose the candidate constructive questions/comments, especially on the appropriateness of the proposed title and the field of the dissertation with the intended content, the proposed topic of the doctoral dissertation and its scientific relevance, the planned research methods and their feasibility, and the chosen literature as well as expectations to provide an original contribution to the scientific field. The members of the Committee for monitoring the progress of a doctoral student provide the candidate with eventual suggestions for improvement of the disposition.

The members of the Committee for monitoring the progress of a doctoral student shall comment on a possible request to write a dissertation in the form of original scientific articles (should it be approved or not) and indicate the potential need of the consent by the Commission for Ethics in the Research Area. The members also assess the adequacy of the research plan for the management of research data.

If time allows, the audience (other students as well as the pedagogical and scientific staff of the faculty) is invited to pose questions to the candidate.

The presentation lasts up to 90 minutes. It is led by a member of the Commission for doctoral studies or the vice-dean.

First doctoral presentation – presentation of the topic of doctoral dissertation: guidelines

After the presentation, the members of the Committee assess whether the disposition is appropriate for further consideration. If the Committee provides the candidate with suggestions for improvement of the disposition, it sets a deadline for correction which may not be longer than 6 months. The Committee only makes suggestions for improvement once. The first doctoral presentation can be repeated at the request of the Committee, which is recorded in the record of the presentation.

On the basis of the (revised) disposition, the members of the Committee write a joint report on assessment of the suitability of the proposed doctoral disposition. The Committee is obliged to prepare a report within two months after the appointment, whereby this time limit is extended for the time determined for a possible correction at the first doctoral presentation. The Committee president's task is to coordinate the work of the Committee in order to write the final report on the assessment and to obtain all signatures of the members of Committee. The mentor and potential co-mentor do not assess the disposition. If the Committee cannot sign a joint assessment, the Committee member who does not agree with the assessment must submit a separate assessment of the suitability of the submitted doctoral dissertation disposition. In the case that a member of the Committee is a foreigner who does not understand the Slovenian language, the report is submitted in both Slovenian and English language.

Under the authorization of the Senate, the Committee’s report is dealt with by the Commission for Doctoral Studies. If the Commission confirms the positive report, it sends a proposal for the confirmation of the topic of the doctoral dissertation together with the requested documents to the Commission for Doctoral Study of the University of Ljubljana. 

 

As a rule, the dissertation shall be written in Slovene, and may also be written in English with the consent of the senate of the University of Ljubljana. If it is not written in Slovene, the student shall also be obliged to write an introduction, conclusion and summary of the central part (up to 1500 words) using appropriate scientific terminology in the Slovene language.

The doctoral dissertation must be written in A4 format. The top of the title page of the dissertation shall have the wording “University of Ljubljana” in the middle of the line, “Faculty of Social Sciences” shall be written under it and below that shall be an indication of the name and surname of the candidate (also in the middle of the line). The title of the doctoral dissertation shall be written under the name and below that shall be the wording "Doctoral Dissertation", and below that the wording “Ljubljana and year" (again in the middle of the line). The University of Ljubljana and the Faculty of Social Sciences shall be written in capital letters, and the rest of the text in lower case letters.

The first inside page of the work shall be the same as the title page, except that the name of the supervisor and the potential co-supervisor shall be written under the name of the candidate with a central alignment, whereby their names shall be preceded by the complete pedagogical or research title. The inside cover shall be written in black letters on white paper, which must not contain pictures, logos, photographs, etc.

The cover and the first inside page of the doctoral dissertation shall be followed by the following in the order below:

• indication of the assessors of the doctoral dissertation;
• dedication, which is not a mandatory component and is added by the student only if they wishes;
• extract in Slovene and English with single line spacing, each up to 300 words, to be published in the repository, and with at least five key words in both languages;
• index of contents;
• Introduction; 
• body text;
• decision;
• a possible extract;
• bibliography;
• subject and author index;
• eventual appendices, including – subject to the consent of the Research Ethics Committee – a list of primary and secondary data sources and an indication of their availability.

Upon submitting the final work, the student shall submit an electronic version of the author’s statement on a special form (prescribed by the UL), which is kept in the student information system.

The header and footer ‘forms’ shall not be used in the doctoral dissertation.

The dissertation may not be shorter than 160 pages and not longer than 350 pages without appendices and extract.

The dissertation shall be written and edited in accordance with the Guidelines for writing and editing professional and scientific works at FSS. The candidate shall be responsible for the linguistic correctness of the dissertation, and the DSC may reject it if it is not prepared in accordance with the instructions referred to in this article.

• Template for final thesis writing at the 3rd study cycle FDV

The content of the doctoral dissertation abstract in electronic form shall show:

• the basic results of the research work;
• the research methodology;
• the original contribution to the development of the relevant research field.

The abstract shall be 5 to 8 pages long.

 

A doctoral candidate enrolled in a four-year doctoral study programme shall submit a doctoral dissertation to a member in electronic and printed formats together with the consent of the supervisor and co-supervisor no later than two years after enrolling in the last year of the study programme or in an additional year.

In case of justified reasons (e.g.: maternity, paternity, extended documented sick leave lasting no less than six months) that occurred in the period from the last enrolment in the programme to the deadline for submitting the dissertation, the member may exceptionally extend the deadline for submitting the dissertation for a maximum of one year to a doctoral candidate based on an application.

If a student does not submit a doctoral dissertation by the deadline, they shall be obliged to submit an application to the professional service for continuation or completion of studies after the suspension.

The candidate shall first submit the electronic version of the doctoral dissertation, the doctoral dissertation submission form, proof of publication or the scientific paper accepted for publication, the data management plan, and the summary of the dissertation in electronic form to the professional service. 

 

A doctoral candidate has up to 20 minutes to present their doctoral dissertation using various multimedia techniques.

Members of the Doctoral Studies Committee may suggest possible improvements to the doctoral dissertation. If time allows, the audience (other students as well as any teaching and scientific staff of the faculty) is invited to ask questions to the candidate.

The presentation lasts up to 90 minutes. It is led by the member of the Committee for Doctoral Studies or the Vice-dean.

 

 

Following the presentation, the Committee members assess whether the proposed doctoral dissertation is suitable for further consideration. If the Committee provides the candidate with suggestions to improve the dissertation, it sets a deadline for corrections, which may not be longer than 1 year.

The members of the Committee should also assess whether the proposed dissertation – overall and taking into account all of the evaluation criteria – may be of exceptional quality and may represent an outstanding achievement and breakthrough in the research field, and may therefore be nominated for Cum laude evaluation.

When they reach an agreement, the candidate is invited back to the room to inform him/her about the conclusion of the second doctoral presentation.

Members of the Doctoral Studies Committee are obliged to review the submitted (final) dissertation within 2 months of receiving the dissertation and submit written reports on their assessment of the dissertation. This deadline may be extended for a period equalling the period given for correction determined by members of the Doctoral Studies Committee at the second doctoral presentation, but not longer than 1 year. The mentor and any co-mentor do not assess the dissertation.

Upon authorisation of the Senate and based on the submitted reports, the Committee for Doctoral Studies accepts the doctoral dissertation, rejects it, or returns it to the candidate to amend or supplement it, and sets a suitable time limit for this, not exceeding 1 year.

When the Committee for Doctoral Studies has approved the doctoral dissertation, the candidate submits bound copies and an electronic version of the dissertation. The defence generally takes place within 1 month of the date when the Committee for Doctoral Studies approved the dissertation.

 

When the Committee for Doctoral Studies accepts the doctoral dissertation and confirms the date of the PhD viva, the candidate shall deliver soft-bound dissertations for her/his Committee members and three hard-bound copies for ODKJG and NUK  (JG Central Social Sciences Library & National and University Library) to the Student Affairs office (DS-03).

The PhD viva begins with the presentation of the candidate's curriculum vitae, the title and the field of the dissertation as well as the process of dissertation acceptance up to that point. The candidate and the DSC chair who makes the presentation do so standing up.

The DSC chair then informs the candidate about the defence/PhD viva procedure and invites the members of the DSC to submit their dissertation reports.

Candidates have the right to present their doctoral dissertation within 30 minutes, using a variety of audiovisual aids. During the presentation, they can react to eventual comments written in the reports of DSC members.

After the presentation of the candidate, the members of the DSC have the right to ask questions, followed by others present at PhD viva, i.e. with the approval of the DSC chair. The questions should be asked in such a way that the candidate can answer them within a maximum of an hour and a half.

Prior to the PhD viva, the candidate is entitled to a 45-minute break to prepare the PhD viva.

After the PhD viva, the DSC meets separately and takes a decision on whether the candidate has successfully defended their doctoral dissertation. The decision is issued in writing, stating who defended the doctoral dissertation, the title of the dissertation, the decision and a brief explanation of the decision (up to 30 lines), the date and time of the PhD viva and the signatures of DSC members with an indication of their roles in the DSC. This decision is then read by the DSC chair to the candidate. Everyone stands during this time.

The DSC chair takes minutes on the PhD viva, whereby they note the questions posed to the candidate and the decision conclusion on the success of the PhD viva. If after a successful defence and based on positive assessments (assessments of the doctoral dissertation, suitability of the article and success of the dissertation defence) the DSC determines that the work of the doctoral candidate overall and under all assessment criteria is of exceptional quality, it may propose to the senate of the UL member that the candidate’s work be awarded a distinction (cum laude). The FSS senate shall decide on this based on the reasoned assessment of the DSC that the doctoral candid

The first conference of the University of Ljubljana's Interdisciplinary Study Programme HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES, entitled New Perspectives in the Humanities and Social Sciences, took place on 26 and 27 January 2023.

We are planning on organising the doctoral conference every two years - the 2nd HiD conference will take place in the academic year 2024/25.

The aim of the conference is to bring together PhD students from different faculties and disciplines for future joint work, highlighting the importance of collaboration between different institutions and the development of an interdisciplinary and innovative approach to study and research.

The conference brings together the fields of interdisciplinary doctoral studies at the following faculties of the University of Ljubljana: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Academy of Music, the Academy of Theatre, Film, Radio and Television, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Social Work.
