Prerequisits:
Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.
It is recommended for students to have the knowledge of International Relations, International Law and Foreign Policy.
With the enrolment in the course students unconditionally consent that all video and photo materials on which they may appear can be used for the promotion of the course of programme.
Objectives and competences
OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the course are to:
(a) acknowledge students about the basic issues in diplomatic and consular relations;
(b) enable students for a critical assessment of the diplomatic practice;
(c) empower students to link the diplomatic theory to practice and vice versa.
COMPETENCES
Students would be endowed with the following competences:
(a) the capability to understand the processes that are going on in the diplomatic intercourse in the International Community;
(b) the competence to use appropriately the diplomatic vocabulary in theory and practice;
(c) the ability to prepare different pieces of diplomatic correspondence (note verbale, invitations, bout de papier etc.);
(d) the critical thinking on the diplomatic practice;
(e) the capability to cross-curricula transfer of knowledge, which would be strongly related to the course of International Organisations.
Content (Syllabus outline)
The course covers four aspects of diplomatic and consular relations:
-the history of diplomacy (from its blueprints to the 21st century);
-the structure of diplomacy (bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral diplomacy; different topics in diplomacy);
-Diplomatic and consular law (its development, purpose and functions);
-protocol and ceremonial;
-diplomatic practice.

-the capability to recognise, define and describe the characteristics of the diplomatic and consular relations;
-the ability to classify and explain different approach to diplomatic and consular relations;
-the competence to apply, develop and critically assess different approaches to the diplomatic theory and practice.
Learning and teaching methods:
Lectures, seminars, field work (visits at the MFA etc.), simulations.
Assessment
Final exam: 100 %. Different activities can rise the grade obtained at the exam.
