Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.

Objectives and competences

To help students develop the knowledge and professional skills required to understand simpler texts related to the chosen topics, skim for key information, analyse the texts and produce shorter texts as well as to present them. Teach them to identify analyse and use relevant terminology. Apply the knowledge of grammatical rules to specialized texts Help the students understand authentic aural documents in German language. Students will be able to understand and summarize the contents of texts and express their opinion. Students will have short oral presentations, they will be able to participate in discussions on topics in the field of social sciences, use the relevant terminology, grammatical structures, present a topic and arguments to support their position.

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Exploration of basic materials related to social sciences; the topic is German society today, the German political system, media, migrations, terrorism, education, culture; 2. Exercises for acquiring and expanding field-specific vocabulary and terminology; 3. Exercises in listening comprehension; 4. Exercises in reading comprehension; 5. Exercises in production of short texts.

Intended learning outcomes:

1. understand and critically evaluate complex professional texts dealing with topics related to the field of social sciences; 2. use field-specific vocabulary and terminology, and functional structures, typical of the selected field; 3. coherently summarise, paraphrase and create written and oral messages in a foreign language; 4. understand spoken messages, typical of the selected field; 5. effectively present their position in discussions

Learning and teaching methods:

Practical work, oral presentation of seminar paper, written and oral assessment, active participation.

Assessment

Written or oral examination /3 written tests (3x20 %), oral presentation of seminar paper (20 %), oral assessment (10%), active participation (10%).
