Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.
Objectives and competences
To help students develop the knowledge and professional skills required to effectively communicate in an English speaking academic settings. Students will be able to communicate in English in an academic setting, understand and summarize, as well as independently write academic texts in the selected field of study. They will be able to participate in debates and discussions related to their field of study and conducted in English, as well as prepare and deliver efficient public presentations related to their field of study in English. Students will be able to synthesise in English and write a research essay.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Study of genres, typical of academic written communication; Reading and analysis of authentic social science academic and professional texts; Exercises for acquiring and expanding basic social science vocabulary and teminology; Exercises in coherent summarising and paraphrasing of written and oral messages; Exercises in the use of functional structures, typical of academic social science discourse; Study of principles of effective public speaking. Use of sources, essay writing.
Intended learning outcomes:
Students will be able to: produce academic texts; understand and critically evaluate authentic social science texts; use basic social science vocabulary and terminology; use functional structures relevant for the successful functioning within the social science field; deliver effective oral presentations in English. Write a research essay.
Learning and teaching methods:
Tutorials, reflective teaching, pair and group work, individual work, oral presentatione, e-learning.
Assessment
written or oral examination /2 written tests (2x25 %), research essay with oral academic presentation and defence (40%), Active participation (10%).
