Prerequisits:
Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.
Objectives and competences
To help students develop the knowledge and professional skills required to effectively communicate in an English speaking professional settings.
Students will be able to communicate in English in a professional setting, and understand as well as independently write professional and academic texts in the selected field of study. They will be able to understand professional contents written or presented in English. They will be able to prepare and deliver efficient presentations of academic posters, oral presentations and also to present their informed opinion in English.
Content (Syllabus outline)
1.Exploration of topics related to the field of political science and governance (party systems, elections, public administration etc.);
2.Exercises for acquiring and expanding field-specific vocabulary and teminology;
3.Exercises in coherent summarizing, paraphrasing and creation of written and oral messages;
4.Exercises in listening comprehension;
5.Study of principles of effective argumentative discourse.
6.Preparation for an event attendance and writing a reflection,
7.Presentation of a research in a simulation of an Academic Poster Conference session;
Intended learning outcomes:
Students will be able to:
1. understand and critically evaluate professional texts dealing with main topics related to the field of political science and governance;
2. use field-specific vocabulary and terminology, and functional structures, typical of the selected field;
3. coherently summarise, paraphrase and create written and oral messages in a foreign language;
4. understand spoken messages, typical of the selected field;
5. apply principles of effective argumentative discourse.
Learning and teaching methods:
Lectures, seminars, oral presentation of seminar paper, written and oral assessment, active participation.
Assessment
2x written or oral midterm examinations (2x20%); oral presentation with seminar paper (25%); oral assessment with preparation (15%); active participation (20%).
