Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.

Objectives and competences

To help students develop the knowledge and professional skills about basic principles of negotiations in foreign language and in different cultural settings, in order to facilitate effective communication in German speaking professional context. Students will be able to analyze the structure of arguments and counter arguments related to a given topic, use adequate vocabulary and terminology, grammatical and functional language structures to present arguments in German language, produce adequate written and oral outputs for the achievement of communicative purposes in negotiation settings, in the context of international conferences, in public debates, in public relations and in other professional settings.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Exploration of advanced materials related to the field of international relations and European studies; Home affairs. German migration policies, terrorism, Germany in international relations. International Organisations, their system, role and functions. Exercises for acquiring and expanding field-specific vocabulary and terminology; Grammar exercises and the study of language functions typical of debates (argumentation, formulating hypotheses, counter arguments, quoting, comparison etc.); Exercises in listening comprehension; Exercises in oral comprehension Exercises in text production

Intended learning outcomes:

Students will be able to: understand and critically evaluate complex professional texts dealing with topics related to the field of international relations and European studies; use field-specific vocabulary and terminology, and functional structures, typical of the selected field; coherently summarise, paraphrase and create written and oral messages in a foreign language; understand spoken messages, typical of the selected field; apply principles of effective argumentative discourse in a given situation; effectively present their position in discussion; Students will be able to transfer the acquired linguistic knowledge to the professional settings and efficiently function in the German speaking professional environment.

Assessment

1st term 2 written or oral tests (40 %), oral assessment (5%) active participation (5 %). 2nd term written or oral test (20 %), oral presentation of seminar paper (20 %), oral assessment (5%) active participation (5 %).
