Objectives and competences

The purpose of this course is to enable students to understand the concept and practice of work, which is crucial for individuals and society.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The concept of work (identification and evaluation of what is socially recognized as work) and work practices (types of work, division of work, work organization) depend on the specific social context, and therefore the study of work makes it easier to understand the operation and changing of society. We will address patterns of organization and division of work at the macro level (society) as well as the experiences and attitudes to work at the micro level (individuals). Work is considered as an instrument of individual participation in society, ensuring social status and social contacts, on the other hand there are risks associated with work (such as unfair discrimination or unemployment). The work is embedded in time - thus we will address current topics and issues, which will help students to understand today's changing world of work (Flexibilisation and the intensification of work, globalization, new technologies, the European labour market, (un) balance of work and private /family life , masculinized and feminized professions and occupations, homosexuality as a stigma in the workplace). Analysis of modern facets of work enables students to use sociological concepts such as power, class, gender, status and with newer concepts and research in the field of sociology of work. Students are encouraged to analyse topical issues of sociology of work through individual/ group project/problem-work. This course will address the following topics: the concept and conceptualisation of work (work history, meaning of work, work and idleness), changing labour (globalization - the new global division of labor, flexibilisation of labour, industrial and economic democratization, work process and technological change), a division of work (social and technical division of labour, formal and informal work, paid and unpaid work, gender division of labour), the professions and the occupations, the structuring of work, organization of work (cooperation and conflict, power, interests and work), risks at work (work and health, stigma at work, unemployment), sexuality and work.

Intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge of theoretical concepts and changing work practices will help students to understand the phenomenon of work, which is crucial for individuals and society. We will learn about both traditional concepts and the recent highlights and topics of sociology of work. Particular attention will be paid to the context of work in order to enable students to understand processes of inclusion and exclusion in the realm of formal paid work and unpaid work based of gender, age, health and other personal circumstances. Students will also gain knowledge about the quality of work and life of people especially in Slovenia and in the European Union.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures, seminars, discussions of literature, discussion of student assignments.

Assessment

The final mark consists of the evaluation of seminar/project work and 2 written/oral examinations. Students will present their work to colleagues.Examinations will consist of questions on topics discussed in lectures and seminars. Students could once improve the exams/seminar work grades. The deadline for improvements will be determined after the completion of lectures.
