Objectives and competences

Students acquire basic knowledge and practical skills that can be applied in a professional environment as well as in everyday and specialised situations. The course sensitises students to reflect on interpersonal communication in different contexts. The course contributes to the development of the following competences: -Understanding interpersonal communication: In-depth understanding of the characteristics of basic interpersonal communication and its importance in personal and professional contexts. Understanding cognitive and emotional aspects of interpersonal communication and develop strategies for emotion regulation and empathic engagement. -Communication skills: Developing basic communication skills such as active listening, paraphrasing, and asking meaningful questions that are essential for effective communication. Improving public speaking and presentation skills. -Critical thinking and analytical skills: Developing the ability to think critically about theories and concepts of interpersonal communication. Reflecting on and analysing different communication situations with increased sensitivity to different perspectives. -Application of theoretical concepts: Applying theoretical concepts to practical examples to better understand interpersonal communication and its dynamics. -Research skills: Strengthening skills to search and study relevant academic sources with the aim of deepening understanding of concepts, theories and their application. -Dialogue and Deliberation: Developing the ability to engage in constructive dialogue and deliberation for resolving conflicts and making decisions. -Teamwork and Collaboration: Strenghthening skills for collaboration within a group. Goal setting, task allocation and time management skills. Creativity and innovation: -Training creativity in the design and presentation of ideas.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Interpersonal communication is a fundamental aspect of human interaction and relationships, making the ability to communicate effectively a critical life skill. The Interpersonal Communication course in the Faculty of Social Sciences offers a comprehensive view of this process that goes beyond the mere exchange of meanings to include the co-creation of meanings and the formation of self-presentation, identity and relationships. The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of interpersonal communication, including its definition, scope and characteristics. Basic communication skills such as active listening, paraphrasing, and asking relevant questions are covered, as well as the importance of dialogue and deliberation. The cognitive and emotional aspects of interpersonal communication, including emotion regulation and the expression of empathy and compassion, are also addressed. The curriculum also includes the role of language in interpersonal communication, both verbal and non-verbal, taking into account socio-cultural influences. Students will acquire skills for managing interpersonal conflict and gain insight into the stages of relationship development, the factors that influence the development and maintenance of relationships, and the role of interpersonal communication in identity and self-presentation. The course also addresses the dynamics of interpersonal communication in groups and teams, including the importance of leadership and collaboration.

Intended learning outcomes:

Know and understand key concepts related to interpersonal communication. Improve interpersonal communication skills in different situations, including teamwork. Develop the ability to analyse different communication situations. Increase sensitivity to different perspectives in communication. Strengthen critical thinking and reflection skills. Be able to apply theoretical concepts to practical examples. Improve the ability to search and study relevant academic sources. Improve public speaking.

Learning and teaching methods:

Teaching and learning methods will be varied and adapted to the different learning styles of students. They will include: - lectures - interactive exercises - group discussions - individual and group work on projects - independent reading and literature research. One quarter of the course takes place via e-learning.

Assessment

Final grade consist of: written papers (50 %) and mid-term exam (50 %).
