Objectives and competences
OBJECTIVES:
To equip students with conceptual apparatus and theoretical framework that will enable them to comprehend and critically reflect the role of digital technologies in contemporary Western societies.
COMPETENCES:
Knowledge and understanding of contemporary theoretical insights into the topic, ability to critically analyze the aspects of everyday life that digital technologies most dramatically influence.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Digital cultures is a transdiciplinary course, aimed at investigating the social and cultural impacts of emerging technologies as well as at studying new cultural practices, forms and artefacts. It is focused mainly on the vast changes in various contexts and aspects of everyday life. The course offers insights into most prominent technologies, themes and debates that characterize contemporary Western cultures. The conceptual apparatus is given through different case studies, while key theoretical insights are engaged with, contextualized and critically interpreted in an anthropological manner.
Topics: internet, digital popcultural production, hacktivism, social networks, electronic devices, internet memes, web economies.
Intended learning outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding of key theoretical views on digital cultures, the ability to employ the conceptual apparatus and theoretical frameworks for the critical analysis of concrete themes and cases.

Assessment
Written midterm exam (30 %), written final exam (70%).
