Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.

Objectives and competences

Students will be invited, encouraged, and guided to: 1. Get familiar with contemporary globalisation issues from various perspectives (social, political, economic, cultural, ecological, etc). 2. Develop a comprehensive analytical framework to critically evaluate contemporary and historical globalisation phenomena. They are encouraged to identify, reflect and critically asses globalisation phenomena. 3. Use the gained knowledge in practice. 4. Further develop their writing skills and their ability to convey essential points of original analysis in a clear and concise manner.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The aim of the course is to systematically familiarise students with contemporary issues of globalisation. The course will introduce recent debates and approaches to globalisation processes. In doing so definitions, histories, measurements, chronologies and explanations of globalisation will be discussed; assessment of implications of globalization processes for the governance will be given; the impact of globalisation processes on a changing role of the state will be critically assessed; the role of financial, economic, ecological and civilisational crisis will be discussed. At the end of the course students should be able to evaluate contending accounts of globalisation, the role of the state, evolving concept of governance and crisis of globalisation.

Intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge and understanding: 1. Students will gain a comprehensive knowledge regarding contemporary issues of globalisation. 2. They will be able to identify, understand and articulate limits of globalisation theories. 3. They will gain a comprehensive insight into the genesis and development of globalisation phenomena and theories. 4. They will be able to differentiate between key concepts of globalisation, including globalism, globality and globalisation. 5. They will gain knowledge to develop and use a complex research framework for a comprehensive analysis of historical and contemporary discourses, practices, institutions and structures.

Lectures, guided debates, case studies, projects, seminars.

Assessment

Final exam (70 %) and Seminar attendance and participation (30 %).
