Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.

Objectives and competences

The main objective of the course is deepening the knowledge of language features and style of journalistic genres and strengthening the capability of writing for the media of each individual. Competences gained at the course are: to be able to analyse and synthesize linguistic features and of the relationship between the textual and co-textual elements in different journalistic genres. to be able to argumentatively assess (in)adequate linguistic choices dependent on the journalistic genre. an improved written journalistic communication in Slovenian. to be able to us the knowledge acquired in the process of production of student's own texts.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course examines journalistic genres as a place where the narrative process of the linguistic objectivity and subjectivity and the linguistic precision and creativity meet. Through the analysis and the production of various texts students get to know the reasons for the adaptation of writing procedures in order to meet expectations of various addressees and their genre literacy. The existing description of journalistic genres is updated with their language characteristics (orthography, lexis, syntax, text formation, norm variations, etc.). The connections between the textual and co-textual elements (photography, figures, graphics, typography, etc.) and the role of language in multimodal journalistic narratives are analyzed as well.

Intended learning outcomes:

Understanding of contextual, non-linguistic rules which affect different levels of verbalization of journalistic genres. Comparative linguistic and stylistic analysis of journalistic/other text types. Synthesis of features of journalistic genres descriptions and features of their linguistic identity, together with their co-textual elements acquired through text analysis. Understanding language as one of the codes in the narrative. Evaluation of language identity of complex journalistic genre.
