Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure. A general knowledge of the basics of International Relations and international organisations is recommended.

Objectives and competences

The aim of the course is to a) equip students with the knowledge that will provide them with an in-depth methodological and substantive base for research and analysis of processes of global governance; and b) to strengthen their ability to analytically approach problems of global concern and seek solutions for them. The competences acquired by the student in this course are as follows: a) the ability to systematically analyse global policies and trends, based on an interdisciplinary approach b) the ability to apply the knowledge, acquired throughout the course, into solutions and policy proposals on issues of global concern c) ability to read and interpret primary sources, d) ability to write comprehensive critical policy contributions for the use of local and international think-tanks and relevant public institutions.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Global governance is a specific process that entails regulation of international relations, horizontally as well as vertically. In this context, the debates in the course will address various questions that will help us analyse processes and participating actors in global governance. This will be done through a study of concrete examples of addressing global issues and the role of particular actors. This will be done by various methods, primaly through workshops.

Intended learning outcomes:

Analyses of various dimensions of governance in the international community, at the global but also at the regional level: the role of selected international institutions; the role of global 'civil society; tensions between actors and institutions and underlying causes of these tensions.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures and seminars (focused discussions, methods that lead toward an independent work and efficient demonstration of results (writing essays, presentation performance), simulations and coursework (e.g. for studying the work of international organisations), introducing guest speakers-practitioners.

Assessment

30 % Written exam 70 % Project group work or other relevant assignments, depending on the work plan for each year.
