Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure. Oral presentation is compulsory to be allowed to take the exam.

Objectives and competences

Main objective of the course is to provide wholesome understanding of the position of developing countries and their participation in development processes. The purpose of the course is to familiarise the students with basics of economic development theories and strategies. This way the students will gain the capabilities to independently analyse development processes. COMPETENCES: The course provides students with the following competences: Understanding of the development processes in developing countries Ability of independent analysis in various fields of development policies; Oral and written communication skills Basic research skills.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course introduces the students to the definition and content of development economics as well as position of developing countries in today's world. It provides them with a historical overview of development of global economy and basic relations between the developed and developing countries. Also, main economic theories and development strategies are discussed. Among central development issues poverty, distribution of income and inequality, population and demographic policies, employment and migration issues are being addressed.

Student: Knows the basic development theories and policies Can describe the relations between different development policies Is capable of analyzing developments, which effect economic and social development.
