Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure. The course logically follows the course on International Protection of Minorities, and furthers the knowledge and competences acquired within that course.

Objectives and competences

The objectives of the course are: to provide students with theoretical and methodological knowledge for the analysis of conflicts in the international community and processes and mechanisms for their management, including post-conflict reconstruction, to enable students to conduct their own empirical analysis of conflicts and conflict management, to train students to be able to understand opportunities for and obstacles to effective conflict management in the contemporary international community. Competences, acquired by students: ability to analyse conflicts and processes of conflict management ability to prepare a longer conceptual-empirical analysis (a case study) and to present it in the classroom, by using the multi-media; data collection, analysis and evaluation of research results; ability to compare individual case studies; critical evaluation of approaches to and practice of conflict management in the contemporary international community.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Conflict occurrence, types of conflicts and their numbers. Study of conflicts, databases and data collections on conflicts. Significance of terminology. Theoretical approaches to conflict research and research on conflict management. Conceptual analysis of conflicts in the context of the structure of the international community: actors, factors, processes and norms. Approaches to conflict management. International institutions and conflict management at the global, regional, sub-regional, bilateral and national levels. Post-conflict reconstruction. Contentious issues, such as self-determination, lack of or access to resources, good governance and rule of law, structural changes. Case study analysis of individual conflicts and conflict management, and a comparative study of those cases. A study trip, subject to financial means.

Intended learning outcomes:

Student: understands conflicts and conflict management processes in the contemporary international community; differentiates among different types of conflicts and evaluates accordingly different possibilities of conflict management as they exist in the contemporary international community; knows sources of conflicts; understands the possibilities and limitations of international conflict management; is able to apply the theoretical knowledge for an own empirical analysis of a selected case of a conflict; is able to present his/her research results, participate in a discussion and review the research results of others.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures, seminars, in-group empirical research and collective presentation of research results, involvement of guest speakers working in the field of conflict management, a study trip subject to sufficient financial means.

Assessment

Exam (50 %), a case study of a conflict prepared by a group of students (20 %), other activities (30 %).
