Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.

Objectives and competences

The objectives of the course are: to give students theoretical and methodological knowledge for analysis of relations in international regions; to qualify students for independent empirical analysis of international regions as objects of international relations for various actors; to qualify students for independent empirical analysis of international regions as subjects in the international community (actorness of international regions); to enable students the use of practical foreign language skills and to profile themselves for employment in the field of a chosen international region. Competences, acquired by students: ability to elaborate a longer conceptual-empirical analysis (scientific article); gathering, analysing and evaluating the data, relevant for theoretical the chosen research problem; ability of oral presentation of scientific article findings via multimedia in a group studying regional phenomena in the same region; ability to offer critical evaluation of peers’ research work in the form of scientific peer review; stamina to defend own research from critical discussion by others.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The phenomenon of international regionalism; three waves of regionalism - old regionalism, new regionalism and inter-regionalism. Study of international regionalism; regions as objects and as new subjects of international relations. Theories of new regionalism and the process of regionalization. Levels of regionalism. Dimensions of regionalism. Types of regionalizing actors. New Regionalism Approach and levels of regionness. Interregionalism and transnational regionalism. Case studies in international regionalism. Case studies of international regionalism and interregionalim; Europe, Americas, Africa, Near and Middle East, Mediterranean, ASEM, EU-MERCOSUR, FEALAC; politico-security dimension; economic-development dimension; environmental-energy dimension; human rights dimension, cultural dimension.

Intended learning outcomes:

Student: comprehends phenomenon of regionalism in the globalized international community; differentiates between theories of International Relations defining regions as objects and those that define regions as actors in the international community; differentiates between levels of regionalism, dimensions of regionalism and types of regionalizing actors; applies mentioned theories to independent analysis of EU actorness cases in the EU’s neighbourhood and globally; is qualified for elaborating a scientific article on the basis of independent research of an international regional problem and present it via the use of multimedia; is capable of evaluating research work of others in the form of peer-review discussion.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures, seminar, group empirical research work and group presentation in the form of simulating a scientific conference.

Assessment

50 % -a scientific article (long written assignment); 10 % -an oral presentation of the scientific article; 20 % -a written peer-review of a scientific article; 20 % -active oral participation in debates at seminars
