Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure. The course upgrades the knowledge obtained in the following courses: International Relations, International Law Politics, Foreign Policy and Diplomatic and Consular Relations.

Objectives and competences

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the course are to: (a) explain the characteristics of the diplomatic studies as an evolving area dealing with diplomacy; (b) empower the knowledge on the role of diplomacy as a symbolic form defining the activities of state and non-state actors in the international community; (c) develop the knowledge on diplomacy as an intersection point between international relations and foreign policy. COMPETENCES Students would be able to: (a) understand the characteristics of diplomacy as the scientific field; (b) analyse the theories of diplomacy as a tool for understanding the diplomatic practice; (c) develop the capabilities to absorb knowledge from different scientific fields as a precondition for understanding diplomacy as a science lying on the intersection of humanities and social sciences.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course covers the following topics: (a) diplomatic theory and theory of the diplomatic representation; (b) the symbolic forms of diplomacy; the establishment of the diplomatic intercourse as a diplomatic ritual; (c) challenges and issues related to the diplomatic and consular law; (d) diplomatic representation and its symbolic value/form; (e) new sources/tools of diplomacy; (f) the theory of diplomatic studies.

Intended learning outcomes:

Expected learning outcomes are: (a) the capability to understand diplomacy/diplomatic studies as a single scientific field; (b) the development of the analytical instrumentarium for analysing diplomacy/diplomatic studies; (c) to develop competences for the analysis of diplomatic problems and the synthesis of the solution of the diplomatic problem; (d) the ability of integration of the acquired knowledge and the upgrade of the diplomatic theory.
