Objectives and competences

Add to already existing knowledge about contemporary globalisation issues from various perspectives (social, political, economic, cultural, ecological, etc). Develop a comprehensive analytical framework to critically evaluate contemporary globalisation phenomena and their impact on strategic relations of the world. The students will be encouraged to identify, reflect and critically asses impact of globalisation processes for various parts of the world in the comparative development perspective. Use the gained knowledge in practice. Further develop their writing skills and their ability to convey essential points of original analysis in a clear and concise manner.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The aim of the course is to systematically familiarise students with the key strategic issues arrising due to globalisation processes. The course will introduce most recent debates and approaches to globalisation processes and methodologies for researching them (ontological, epistemological). Various theoretical approaches to strategic relations will be discussed, including their critique. In the second part the course will analyse consequences of the globalisation processes (positive and negative) for key contemporary strategic issues (political, economic, cultural, etc). The course will furthermore analyse differences and similarities in various regions of the world in different stages of globalisation processes.

Intended learning outcomes:

Students will gain and expand knowledge regarding contemporary issues of globalisation. They will be able to identify, understand and articulate limits of theories of globalisation. They will gain a comprehensive insight into the genesis and development of globalisation phenomena and theories. They will be able to analytically differentiate impact of globalisation processes for various parts of the world. They will gain knowledge to develop and use a complex research framework for a comprehensive analysis of historical and contemporary discourses, practices, institutions and structures.
