Content (Syllabus outline)
The purpose of the seminar is to study selected current issues in communication science. It links basic communication science theories and approaches to the current global challenges of the 21st century that social sciences, especially communication science, are facing. It combines the study of basic readings and their application to specific challenges through guided discussions and essay writing.
The seminar provides students with a basic knowledge of classical social and communication theories (Lippmann, Marx, Weber, Habermas, Berger, Arendt), their contemporary versions and new theorisations in relation to media, journalism and promotional industries, including public relations, marketing and advertising. We explore how these works have influenced our understanding of today’s media and communication phenomena and critically rethink key concepts and ideas in the light of new practices.
