Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure. Recommended knowledge: Visual Culture.

Objectives and competences

The aim of the course is to provide theoretically and historically grounded analytical concepts necessary for understanding contemporary urban visual culture. Students will gain theoretical knowledge and methodological tools for critical analysis and evaluation of media representations that analyse society through images of the city. Understanding of key concepts, processes and phenomena from teh fields of identity, urbanity, and visual culture. Students will be able to critically reflect on and analyse media texts. Students will acquire research skills and develop skills of (visual) text production.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course analyses the relationship between the individual and society through one of the central motifs and locations of contemporary visual culture – the city. The course analyses communicative practices of visualisation of the city through three spheres – the political (public sphere), cultural (institutions) and economic (commercialisation). In the process, it traces the transformations of these three spheres through social trajectory of development of societies from premodern to modern and postmodern. The course brings together a historical overview of urban visual culture (photography, films, posters, advertising), a critical-analytical understanding of specific methods of visual investigation of cities (e.g. flânerie), and contemporary professional and vernacular practices of mediation of the city.

Intended learning outcomes:

Students will gain knowledge of key concepts from theories of identity, urbanity, visual culture. Students gain knowledge of key methodological approaches for critical interpretation of visual representations. Students gain skills and knowledge to create analytical and critical visual representations of urban phenomena. Student is able to analyse and critically evaluate media representations.

Assessment

100 % The final grade consists of two midterm exams and project assignment. The project assignment consists of written part (up to 4000 worlds) and visual (photographic) part. The grade consist of: - two colloquiums (each accounts for 30%, together 60%), - project assignment (40%).
