Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure. General knowledge of computer use, basic software tools (browsing, writing text, ...) and the Internet is recommended. Basic project management knowledge (been as a member in some projects) is also recommended.

Objectives and competences

Aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic principles of project management from idea, through the definition, planning, organizing, implementing and closing the project. Students will be familiarized with two other important aspects of each project: risks and conflict resolution. An additional aim is the practical application of the roles that each student will play in the project team, learn them through cooperation and implementation of project tasks. To achieve these goals, students will gain the following competencies: project start, organization, management, governance and control, participation in the project and critical evaluation of the acquisition of skills through certification procedures and models of project management as a discipline.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Students get familiar with (1) definition of project management (PM) (description of the problem, objectives, resources, constraints, risks), (2) phases, processes and management in PM, (3) PM planning (e.g. activity plan, time scheduling of the "work packages", work breakdown structure, critical path, costs, quality, proposal writing), (4) organization (e.g. organization of teamwork, virtual collaboration...). In this course, the students will be acquainted also with the existing approaches to project management (e.g. PMI). The course deals with PM as a discipline (e.g. for PM certification). Principles to control PM will be also demonstrated (e.g. principles and management models). Students will be acquainted with the specifics of agile management and management of projects in the social sciences and the information society. Objective of the course is to make a group project assignment on a chosen topic.

Intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge: of terminology and processes within project management. Understanding: roles in the project team, risks, critical paths during the execution, the different approaches to project management and collaboration with stakeholders on the project. Use: international methodologies for project management and computer support PV. Analysis: of factors of project management, financial and human resources. Synthesis: The starting points for the project.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures, seminars, group assignments, e-learning, oral presentation, use of ICTs (web applications, simple software tools).
