Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure. Completed coursework/project is a prerequisite to approach oral examination.

Objectives and competences

The overall objective of the course is evaluation of the security situation and the processes of security cooperation in Europe. The aim is to provide students with the knowledge which will help them understand the performance and efforts of different EU institutions for ensuring security. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of security efforts and security processes on the European continent.

Content (Syllabus outline)

In the course of Security and Defence Policy of the EU we will deal with the security situation on the European continent, we will identify contemporary threats to European security. In doing so students will first learn about the historical development of the security efforts of the EU since the end of the second World War. They will study preliminary political and security efforts which led to the development of the concepts of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). Students will learn about the concept of CFSP and CSDP. They will learn about the institutions involved in the implementation of both concepts, CFSP and ESDP, relations between the institutions and a decision making process. Students will also study and analyse cooperation EU with NATO as an important element of the European security architecture, relations with the USA and Russia. Students will study practical aspects of the implementation of the CSDP, learn about the EU conflict prevention mechanisms, and analyse military and civil operations of the EU. Students will identify and analyse problems in the functioning and implementation of the CFSP and CSDP.

To identify institutions whose task is to ensure the security of the European continent. To understand the functioning of the institutions and processes within and between them. To analyse the functioning of the institutions and concepts through missions and operations. To evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of individual institutions and concepts
