Objectives and competences

Goals: To give students an understanding of the complexity of the regional security and to teach students how to evaluate the security situation and processes of the security cooperation in SEE. Competencies: Understanding and evaluation of the regional security situation in SEE. The knowledge of history of conflicts and other disruptive processes in SEE.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Theories of regional security. Security situation and the processes of the cooperation in SEE. Geopolitical definition of the SEE. The history of conflicts and current situation. The role of the international community in SEE (the role of the peace operations). The development and reform of the security sector. Security challenges: violent conflicts in future, organized crime, corruption, illegal migrations, smuggling. Processes and institutions of the regional cooperation. The membership in Nato and Eu. Heritage of conflicts in SEE.

Intended learning outcomes:

Understanding of the complexity of the security situation in SEE (violent conflicts, organized crime, corruption, illegal migrations, smuggling). Understanding of the processes and institutions to guarantee peace and security.

Learning and teaching methods:

Lectures, seminar work, guest speakers, group work with guest speakers, e-learning.

Assessment

70 % Examination (70%) and 2 short papers with oral presentations (30%) 30 % Or Examination (70%) and longer paper – project with oral presentation, 16 pages,( 30%)
