Prerequisits:

Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure. Recommended knowledge: European economic integration.

Objectives and competences

Goals: This course offers an understanding of and evaluation of the position of the EU in the global economy and compare EU integration with other economic integrations or large economies (USA, BRIC) and analyse economic relations of EU with other economic integrations and selected economies. The aim is to analyse and compare structural characteristics of economics and review selected economic policies that strongly influence the position of the EU in the global economy (such as common commercial, competition policy, industrial policy and promotion of competitiveness). Competences: Students: are able to evaluate and interpret the role of the EU in the global economy. Can review theories and identify approaches behind selected economic policies; such as industrial policy and promotion of competitiveness, competition policy and common commercial policy. Detect major issues relevant to EU external relations. Apply basic economic analysis (such as cost-benefit analysis).

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course addresses the position and determinants of position of EU in global economy. In the first part of the course we explore the concept of economic integration, as well as its implications for a country’s economic growth, using the example of the actual evolution of European integration. In the second part we study the main European policies, their common objectives, instruments and financial means, and their evolution over time, together with the working of the monetary and fiscal policies of the EU.

Intended learning outcomes:

At the end of this course, students will be able to: -identify and review structural characteristics and competitiveness of EU economy and other economic integrations -collect and analyse data and indicators necessary for comparative analysis -undrestand, review and compare selected policies - common commercial policy, competition policy and industrial policy among key global economies/integrations -review instruments and predict effect of the instruments used by selected economic policies -apply knowledge and comprehension of the selected policies (common commercial policy, competition policyand industrial policy) of European economic integration into different professional environments.

Assessment

80 % Written exam 20 % seminars and role play – presenting arguments of different interest groups. Participation and active involvment in the class is required. Individual assignments may be replaced by team seminar work or project work resulting in an research analysis/scientific article if agreed in advance (within first two weeks of the course).
