Students are allowed to participate in the course provided that they have completed the enrolment procedure.

Objectives and competences

To help students develop basic knowledge and professional skills about basic principles of negotiations in foreign language and in different cultural settings, in order to facilitate effective communication in Spanish speaking professional context. Students will be able to analyze the structure of arguments and counter arguments related to a given topic, use adequate vocabulary and terminology, grammatical and functional language structures to present arguements in Spanish language.

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Exploration of advanced materials related to the field of international relations and European studies; 2. Exercises for acquiring and expanding field-specific vocabulary and teminology; 3. Exercises in coherent summarizing, paraphrasing and creation of written and oral messages; 4. Exercises in listening comprehension; 5. Study of language functions typical of debates (argumentation, formulating hypotheses, counter arguments, quoting, comparison etc.); 6. Through several articles of different level and longitude and according to the knowledge level of the class, the student will be acquainted with the themes of actual Spain, such as its political system (Constitution, Autonomic Communities, Monarchy...), migrations, terrorism, international relationships between Spain and other countries in the world

Intended learning outcomes:

Students will be able to: 1. understand and critically evaluate complex professional texts dealing with topics related to the field of international relations and European studies; 2. use field-specific vocabulary and terminology, and functional structures, typical of the selected field; 3. coherently summarise, paraphrase and create written and oral messages in a foreign language; 4. understand spoken messages, typical of the selected field; 5. apply basic principles of effective argumentative discourse in a given situation.

Learning and teaching methods:

1st term (lectures, seminars, written and oral assessment, active participation), e-learning. 2nd term (lectures, seminars, oral presentation of seminar paper, written and oral assessment, active participation), e-learning.

Assessment

1st term 2 written tests (40 %), oral assessment (5%) active participation (5 %). 2nd term written test (20 %), oral presentation of seminar paper (20 %), oral assessment (5%) active participation (5 %).
