Why study statistics?

Modern world is filled with data on which we base many key decisions. That is why the capacity for correct analysis and interpretation of data is necessary almost everywhere.

Knowledge acquired at the programme is wide enough for students to be able to analyze data from any field and cooperate on the current research issues - be it in the fields of marketing, election analysis or natural sciences.

Statistician's work is incredibly diverse and also intellectually challenging. New data and new questions always pose new challenges and require new approaches - there is very little routine work.

What is statistics?

Statistics is the science of getting knowledge out of data. It includes collectinganalysis and interpretation of data and also efficientpresentation of results. Statistical inference is indispensable for advancing sciences like medicine and genetics and also for reaching important decisions in the economic and public spheres.
Data is collected all the time and everywhere: from medical research to scientific experiments, from satellites in space to social networks like Facebook, from public opinion surveys to data about buyer preferences. 
Statistics solves everyday problems by using strong theoretical foundations.

Employment

Statistics is the basis for research in almost all scientific disciplines. Many fields of private and public sector use the services of statisticians (health, education, public services, insurance companies, information and communication companies, retail and other industries). That gives the students an incredibly diverse employment opportunities.

The programme is the only one of its kind in Slovenia, therefore there are not yet a lot of experts from the field of statistics in the job market. Despite this, there is a noticeable increase in quality of statistical research and an increased demand for them. With students arriving to the job market, there is an increasing awareness of necessity for quality analysis and interpretation of results in research environments, companies and public establishments.
