How to Research Online Hate Speech?
Online hate speech poses a significant challenge to modern societies, and its significance has grown even further with the digitalization and widespread use of the internet. To assess the current state of the field, Prof. Dr. Vasja Vehovar, Živa Šubelj, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Andraž Petrovčič, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Jošt Bartol from the Center for Social Informatics UL FSS, conducted a review of survey questions on online hate speech.
The results of the study show, among other things, that the survey questions most frequently address online hate speech in general and do not focus on specific personal characteristics (e.g., race, nationality). However, categorizing the survey questions by topic revealed that they most frequently address response and coping strategies, perceptions, victimization, and exposure to online hate speech.
