Short content
In this course, students gain a basic theoretical and methodological knowledge for a critical understanding of media texts, in which the text is defined as the combination of visual, audio and text messages. Emphasis will be placed on two paradigms that have led to modern methods and approaches to text analysis - Critical Discourse Analysis and Multimodal Analysis. Two epistemological paradigms will be explained in order to understand the abovementioned methodological approaches. The first epistemological stream will address the theoretical concepts of language, structure, character speech genres, intertextuality, etc., as well as theories of language and their authors. Here the focus will be in particular on authors and theories coming from the paradigm of functional and structural linguistics (F. de Saussure, MAK Halliday, MM Bakhtin, R. Jakobson et al.). The second epistemological stream will be explained through social theory, especially Marxism, postmarxism, structuralism, and post-structuralism.
