Short content
The course deals with the history of journalism in Slovenia and in the global context and relates it to the technological, economic, political and cultural changes, which influenced gathering and distribution of information and production and exchange of news in society. These developments are assessed through different phases: from the precursors of journalism, which include oral and handwritten collection and distribution of messages, to the first beginnings of modern journalism in the period of the craftsman newspaper printing, and to the technological breakthroughs of the 19th century and the development of telecommunication networks and mass media, key processes accompanied by professionalisation, industrialisation and commercialisation of journalism. In addition to the key historical periods in the development of journalism the course makes a critical appraisal of the topics and concepts, which are of the central importance in assessing the social role of journalism. They include issues such as freedom of the press, censorship, objectivity, the right to communicate, and the public sphere. Development of journalism is related to the other central social institutions and by focusing on the key historical processes, thus embedding changes in journalistic practices within a wider social context.
