Workshop on mixed-mode surveys 2019 with prof. Mick Couper

Centre for Social Informatics (CSI) organized an interactive workshop on mixed-mode surveys which was held on 23 September 2019. The keynote »Transition to online surveys: Opportunities and challenges« was given by prof. Mick Couper from University of Michigan (USA). His talk was followed by a discussion and exchange of experiences among attendees working at CSI, Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia and National Institute of Public Health.  

Prof. Couper presented the latest trends, experiences, findings and risks when using mixed-mode surveys. He emphasized the importance of minimizing measurement errors and costs, without compromising data quality. One of the biggest issues of web surveys use in national projects is the problem of non-coverage and lack of internet access. It seems smartphones do not solve these issues. In addition, prof. Couper stressed out that data collection permission (GDPR) is an important issue of web surveys. Studies show that the rate of consent is much lower in web surveys compared to other survey modes. Prof. Couper suggested that in national and official surveys combining web surveys with personal interviewing remains a necessity.

During his visit at CSI Prof. Couper also attended the Web Survey Day that took place on 25^th September 2019. He gave a lecture about practical challenges in web survey methodology. In particular, he focused on potential concerns and implications related to the use of mobile surveys. More >>
