Associate Professor Dr. Jelena Juvan is a lecturer and Senior Research Fellow at the Chair of Defence Studies and the Defence Research Centre, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. She is currently serving her second term as Head of the Chair of Defence Studies.

Her teaching and research focus on EU security and defence policy, European security, civil–military relations, and cyber and information security. She lectures in several undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including EU Security and Defence Policy, Professional Practice, Security in the Information Society, Defence and Security Systems, and Cyber Security.

Her research examines the evolving nature of security in contemporary societies, with particular emphasis on the role of small states within the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), the dynamics of collective security and societal resilience, and the adaptation of defence systems to digital transformation. She has participated in numerous national and EU-funded research projects (including FP7 and Horizon 2020 programmes, as well as national defence research schemes) and has authored a wide range of academic publications on European security, crisis management, and defence reform.

Dr. Juvan has also served as an independent evaluator for EU research programmes and as a member of the NATO International Scientific Evaluation Group (ISEG). Beyond academia, she contributes to Slovenia’s strategic policy dialogue as Vice-President of the Euro-Atlantic Council of Slovenia, promoting Euro-Atlantic values, transatlantic cooperation, and public engagement in security affairs.

In addition to her academic and research work, she is a regular commentator on contemporary security issues in domestic and international media.
