Short content
The course on subject-specific research methodologies provides basic competencies and an overview of research methods from various disciplines that form the interdisciplinary framework of digital linguistics. The course covers the following topics:
1. Basics of computational processing of language data. Types of language data, data and metadata collection, encoding and conversions, basic corpus analysis techniques.
2. Methods of language data annotation. Automatic annotation: lemmatization, morphosyntactic tagging; tree-banks; named entities; manual annotation; transcription of speech data.
3. Methods of computational linguistics through examples of language applications: critical reading of selected articles.
4. Basics of cognitive linguistics and review of methods through research examples.
5. Basics of sociolinguistics and review of methods through research examples.
6. Language and the Internet - methods of analysing web discourse.
7. ICTs as a research tool and as a research object.
8. Legal and ethical aspects of language data processing; protection of personal data; protection of intellectual property and copyright; security in digital environments.
