The beginnings of mass communication studies: University of Columbia, from the 1930s to the 1950s (Lazarsfeld, Cantril, Blumler, Herzog, Lowwenthal, Katz, Merton, Riesman, Adorno, Horkheimer, etc.) Here we examine the social and cultural contexts of the creation of the sociology of the media, administrative and critical research, the fall of the critical sociology of the media and the positivism of the American tradition of mass communication studies. II. Media as a technology: A move towards the study of the communication forms facilitated by the media (Innis, McLuhan) The relation of “the social” to “the mediated” as problem for media theory. III. Media examined in the context of cultural studies: from culturalism to structuralism.
