Short content

The course takes a cultural approach to television's evolution as a technology and system of representation and introduces students to the basic concepts, forms, practices and functions that have guided the evolution of television. It examines developments in the programming, industrial and institutional structure, regulation, audiences, technological innovation, and cultural significance of television over time. The course focuses also on how the art and business of primetime television changed after the introduction of “new media,” from cable to the Internet. Course emphasizes the formal aspects of television and will be devoted to a study of the evolution of television's fundamental genres of storytelling: situation comedy, drama, reality, and other forms.
