Short content
Social entrepreneurship is analysed as a trend that is changing the character of NPOs. NPOs are an important structural element of European welfare systems. First, the social conditions under which the different welfare systems have emerged are explained; then, the role of NPOs within the different welfare systems is analysed. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the current reform processes in the welfare states. In addition, the impact of these reforms on the changing role of NPOs and the wider social economy in European societies, as well as on the development of social entrepreneurship, will be examined. Social entrepreneurship is discussed from different perspectives (definitions and typologies of social entrepreneurship, profit vs. social entrepreneurship and placement of social entrepreneurship within the welfare triangle). Different dilemmas arising from the development of social entrepreneurship are discussed (commercialisation of nonprofit sector and privatisation of welfare services in the context of changes in the welfare state) as well as future challenges.
