Short content
This course offers an overview of the development of modern philosophical thought through its foundational concepts, as they function in contemporary intellectual discourse and as developed by key thinkers across different historical periods. Topics include: the notions of subject and substance in Descartes and Spinoza (Early Modern Philosophy); critique and dialectics in Kant and Hegel (Enlightenment); society and the individual in Marx and Nietzsche (Romanticism); sign and language in Saussure and Jakobson (Linguistics); discourse and the unconscious in Freud and Lacan (Psychoanalysis); touch and writing in Nancy and Derrida (Deconstruction); and power and ideology in Foucault and Althusser (Structuralism).
