Short content
The course analyses the relationship between the individual and society through one of the central motifs and locations of contemporary visual culture – the city. The course analyses communicative practices of visualisation of the city through three spheres – the political (public sphere), cultural (institutions) and economic (commercialisation). In the process, it traces the transformations of these three spheres through social trajectory of development of societies from premodern to modern and postmodern.
The course brings together a historical overview of urban visual culture (photography, films, posters, advertising), a critical-analytical understanding of specific methods of visual investigation of cities (e.g. flânerie), and contemporary professional and vernacular practices of mediation of the city.
