Short content

The course aims at introducing and explaining the security paradigms from the distant past to the present. By introducing the basic historical sources: a) early approaches (Old china, India, Ancient Greece, Rome), b) classical political thought, c) Christian political thought on the concept of just war, d) modern approaches (realism, liberalism, structuralism, etc.) the phenomena of individual's security dilemma will be evaluated, as well as those of states and international system, together with the existing process of institutionalisation of international security provision. Students will critically evaluate the phenomenon of security in international relations in the light of international institutional security framework at the level of: 1. Power of balance system, 2. System of collective security in the framework of the League of Nations, 3. System of collective security in the framework of the UN, and 4. System of military-political and defense alliances (with special focus on NATO). The latest trends in international security provision, in particular the Humanitarian Intervention and »Responsibility to Protect« will be evaluated as well.
