Short content
The aim of the course is to systematically familiarise students with cosmopolitism and cosmopolitan political theory. The course is an historical and conceptual survey of the idea of cosmopolitanism. We shall ask ourselves what duties, if any, do people have to human beings living outside their own country? Is there something called “world citizenship”? Where are the limits of the responsibilities of our political and social systems? How is cosmopolitan democracy different from national or supranational democracy? The first part of the course will be a historical survey of various forms of cosmopolitism (Stoics, Cynics, early modern cosmopolitism of Grotius, de Vittoria, Pufendorf, Hobbes, Enlightment cosmopolitism of Kant, Hume and Smith). The second part will deal with ethical issues of modern cosmopolitism (ethical and political theory of cosmopolitism, justice beyond borders, cosmopolitism and globalisation, cosmopolitan democracy).
