Sustainable FDV: scientific research activities

The growing importance of sustainable development is also reflected in the scientific research activities of the Faculty of Social Sciences, which promotes knowledge transfer and interdisciplinary cooperation among its staff through various measures. Researchers at the Faculty of Social Sciences are thus increasingly focusing on specific sustainable development topics related to our faculty's fields of expertise.

A review of scientific publications between 2020 and 2022 shows that a good two-thirds of scientific publications by FSS researches include at least indirectly sustainable development topics. 17% of publications address sustainability topics in more detail. Researchers most frequently address themes stemming from SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) and SDG 10 (reduced inequalities), followed by SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) and SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure). Other SDGs, such as SDG 4 (quality education), SDG 3 (good health and well-being), SDG 17 (partnerships for the Goals) and SDG 5 (gender equality) are addressed to a lesser extent.

In order to strengthen scientific research activities and interdisciplinary cooperation in the field of sustainable development, the faculty has put in place several measures. These iclude:

  • a review of publications and research projects related to topics such as the environmental crisis, climate change, health and nutrition in the framework of the Sustainable FDV programme,
  • presentations on sustainability topics in the framework of the FSS Open Terms for Science events and
  • the monitoring of research themes and their relevance to SDGs. In addition, additional incentives are planned under the FSS Development Fund to support strategic projects in this field, the communication of project results and the organisation of events.
