Guest lectures by Dr. Cláudia Vasconcelos Silvestre from Lisbon Polytechnic Institute


lizbona-resizeIn November, the Chair of Social Informatics and Methodology hosted Assist. Prof. Cláudia Vasconcelos Silvestre from the School of Communication and Media Studies, Lisbon Polytecnic Institute. The lectures were held within the course New Technologies in Social Science Research at the Postgraduate Programme of Social Informatics.

The lecture focused on how to make data come to life and how to communicate it effectively. She discussed the difference between graphs and infographics and the main steps to make an infographic: (1) organize data, (2) choose relevant information (3) create a story and (4) make an infographic to visualize the story.

Dr. Silvestre visited our Faculty within the Erasmus+ Teaching Mobility programme. She met with the professors and researchers from the Chair of Social Informatics and Methodology, Centre for Social Informatics and Centre for Methodology and Informatics. During her stay she also held workshops with students that worked on specific assignments.

Cláudia Vasconcelos Silvestre holds a degree and a master in Probabilities and Statistics from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, and PhD in Quantitative Methods at Lisbon University Institute (ISCTE). Her research interests include statistical literacy, marketing segmentation, clustering, and mixture models.
