  • Otto Gerdina, PhD is a researcher at Public Opinion and Mass Communication Research Centre in the field of sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FDV) University of Ljubljana (UL). He is currently working on three research projects: Everyday life and life course of old people living in poverty (FDV UL), Housing in Slovenia: a social science survey on the situation and trends (FDV UL) and Joint action on cardiovascular diseases and diabetes (Faculty of Health Sciences UL). He specialises in tehniques for qualitative analysis of data such as content analysis, thematic coding, qualitative literature review, frame analysis and grounded theory.

    He worked as a teaching assistant at the Introduction to Sociology (2018/19), Educational Gerontology (from 2019/20 to 2023/24) and Sociology of Art and Culture (2023/24). He is currently involved in the course Indicators of Social Development (from 2021/22). His main research focus is on social aspects of old-age and ageing, including old-age exclusion, ageism, psychosocial development in old age and media representations of old age.

    He regularly presents the results of his research work at national (SSD) and international conferences (IAGG-ER, ESA). He is an active member of national and international scientific associations, since 2023 he has been the head of the Sociology of Time Section of the Slovenian Sociological Association, a board memeber at Modra fakulteta at the University of Ljubljana, a board member of the Research Committee on Sociology of Aging at the International Sociological Association (ISA), a board memeber of the Research Network on Ageing in Europe at the European Sociological Association (ESA), and a board member of the international Cost Action PAAR-net network, where he participates in the development of participatory research approaches involving older people. In 2018-2020 he was an active member of the ROSE netwok (Reducing Old-Age Social Exclusion: Collaborations in Research and Policy, CA 15122) that responded to research, policy and societal challenges with respect to the social exclusion of older people in Europe. 

    In the last few years he published or co-authored several peer-reviewed scientific articles and chapters including Ageism in Slovenia: assessing differences between 2008 and 2022 (2024); Gerotranscendence and motivation for work past retirement age: a cross-sectional study (2024); Marginalisation of older people's problems as a reflection of news values : the case of the newspaper Delo (2023); Measuring gerotranscendence in Slovenia : revision of the measurement instrument (2020); Gerotranscendence and marital relations in old age : the case of Mr. Metod (2020).

    He is a director and founder of the OPRO, institute for applicative studies that specializes in tackling issues concerning population aging such as ageism, elder abuse, formal care etc. He edited several scientific monographies in the field of ageing that were published by OPRO: Old Age vol. I & II (Simone de Beauvoir), The Gerotranscendence (Lars Tornstam) and co-authored Growing Old Ain't for Sissies (a book on intimate partner violence in old age).

    For his work and achievements, he was awarded The Recognition of Potential for Young Sociologists (Slovene Sociological Association, 2018); University Prešeren Award (UL, 2017); Exceptional Achievements Award (UL, 2016); and The Recognition of Merit (FDV UL, 2015).
