New Publication: Democratic Backsliding in Slovenia: Mutual Reinforcement of Economic Neoliberalism and Illiberal Democracy (Author: Matjaž Nahtigal)

Assist. prof. dr. Matjaž Nahtigal published a contribution on Democratic Backsliding in Slovenia: Mutual Reinforcement of Economic Neoliberalism and Illiberal Democracy in a collection of works entitled Democratic Backsliding in Europe. In it he analyses how difficult and demanding it is to establish independent, responsive and accountable public institutions, and how quickly they become vulnerable in cases of deliberate attempts to undermine them. He also suggests the best strategy for preventing democratic backsliding.

Boštjan Udovič on Pop TV's News Program 24UR Fokus about the Influence of First Ladies and Gentlemen

Prof. dr. Boštjan Udovič commented on the political power of first ladies and gentlemen in Slovenia for the 24UR Fokus news program on Pop TV. While he stated that spouses of top officials do have the right to convey political messages, he also highlighted the need for a clear definition of responsibilities of spouses of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the President of the National Assembly and the President of the National Council in Slovenia, as this would prevent their role and how it is performed being left up to interpretation.

Andreja Jaklič about the Role of FDI in Slovenia's Global Strategic Breakthrough at the Management Congress in Portorož

On 3 October, prof. dr. Andreja Jaklič attended the Management Congress in Portorož. In her speech, she pointed out that Slovenia 2050 is connected to investments here and now, as foreign direct investments determine integration into global value chains, the transfer of technology and knowledge, and the development of the country’s own international companies. She also presented warning signals from the latest survey among foreign-owned firms in Slovenia conducted in collaboration with assist. dr. Iris Koleša at the end of 2024.

Our Researchers Presented their Latest International Business Studies at the AIB CEE Conference in Bratislava, Slovakia

Prof. dr. Andreja Jaklič, prof. dr. Boštjan Udovič, assoc. prof. dr. Anže Burger, assist. dr. Iris Koleša and assist. Gaja Mavri participated at the AIB CEE annual conference. This year, the event took place in Bratislava (Slovakia) between 24 and 26 September, and focused on international business strategies in CEE and beyond aimed at adapting to global change. Our researchers attended the event with six contributions.

About the centre

The research centre specializes in interdisciplinary research in the fields of diplomatic studies, sustainable development, international business and law. Its members collaborate with other established researchers in both national and international projects. They are also intensively involved in national and international research as well as professional and advisory networks, where they exchange research findings with other experts in the aforementioned fields and strengthen the visibility of the research centre, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the University of Ljubljana as research and knowledge institutions. The centre's researchers engage in both basic and applied research. They regularly communicate their research findings to the scientific and professional audiences and other stakeholders. They organize scientific and professional meetings, participate in various consultations prepared by national and international institutions (e.g. different ministries, OECD, World Bank, European Commission, and others), and prepare expert analyses for decision-makers and policymakers. This is how they contribute to the development of Slovenian and international science and professional communities.
