Online meeting: Higher Education Libraries in the New Reality – Examples of Good Practices and Innovations

On Wednesday, June 16, almost 150 librarians of the University of Ljubljana learned about the activities of some libraries during the epidemic of the new coronavirus at an online meeting themed Higher Education Libraries in the New Reality: Examples of Good Practices and Innovations. The meeting was organized by the Library Council of the University of Ljubljana and hosted online by the Faculty of Economics.

Participants learned about the experiences and praxis of libraries in providing services during the epidemic, further on touching on the role and opportunities of libraries in participating in scientific communication processes and supporting the development of open science, while the last part of the meeting was dedicated to advancements in general higher education librarianship and academia.

We listened to experiences from seven higher education libraries and also heard from representatives of the University of Ljubljana, the Slovenian Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, Ministry of Culture’s working group, the Library Council of the University of Ljubljana, the IFLA Section Academic and Research Libraries, and School of Economics and Business. After the presentations discussions took place in four Zoom rooms, on the topics of services, information resources, innovative solutions and human resources.

The Central Social Sciences Library librarians collaborated with the contributions Library in the distance learning process and multimedia production and ZEBRA for reading: digital library of the FSS assigned study literature, where we presented remote resources and services offered to our users, including the exclusive Zebra study literature platform. Due to the need for digitally accessible resources during the pandemic, our library managed to significantly further increase the number of accessible e-books assigned as study literature. We remotely conducted information literacy courses, some of which were included as part of the faculty courses. We also upgraded the offer of video content and online guides intended for better use of library services. Head of Central Social Sciences Library, mag. Mirjam Kotar, together with Melita Ambrožič from the National and University Library, also presented a contribution titled Application and enforcement of professional standards for higher education libraries in which they introduced the newly formed Professional Standards and Recommendations for Higher Education Libraries, which will be valid in Slovenia from 1 June 2021 to 31 May 2030.

A video of the entire meeting will be available on the website of the University of Ljubljana.

We would like to thank all the students and members of staff at our faculty for their input that was broadcast during the meeting on how libraries adapted their services during the epidemic.
