Taiwan: prospects and uncertainty
After seven decades of coexistence and intense cultural and economic integration, the governments in Beijing and Taipei are still as far away each other as the North and South Poles. While for the Beijing government, Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the government of the Republic of China (ROC) regards Taiwan as a fully independent and sovereign state. The Taiwanese reject China’s aspirations and the regime of the Communist Party, and proudly identify themselves as Taiwanese. The PRC’s growing international influence, however, is visibly reducing Taiwan’s room to manoeuvre.
