BA study programme Political Science – Public Policies and Administration

The Political Science - Public Policy and Administration programme builds on the experience, knowledge and 25-year tradition of the previous programme, which has been modernised to respond to changing national and global circumstances and challenges, as well as political change (e.g. Slovenia's membership of the EU and international organisations). In the modernised programme, we offer knowledge and competences that will enable new generations of students to build a distinctive political science graduate profile with additional and specific knowledge in the fields of public policy and administration and the European Union. In this way, students will acquire the knowledge and competences necessary for employment in the public, non-profit or private sector or for continuing their studies within three years.

Why Political Science – Public Policies and Administration?
If you are interested in the processes of concentration of knowledge and power in the modern world, how to use the modern state to improve the quality of people's lives, how public policies are formulated and implemented, the role of different political institutions (e.g. parliament and government) at different levels of government (municipality, state, EU), the role of public administration in decision-making processes and the implementation of decisions, and the relationship between the state and civil society, then the Politics - Public Policies and Administration programme is the right programme for you.
The study programme is internationally comparable and follows all the basic knowledge required of a political science graduate by the European Confederation of Political Science Associations, and adds political science knowledge related to issues of public policy-making, the functioning of public administration and the European Union.
Graduates will acquire various skills and competences, such as knowledge and understanding of the field of study - political science, public policy and administration - and its phenomena, the ability to adapt to changes in the political and administrative environment, an understanding of the diversity between countries and societies, and the ability to apply knowledge in practice. It will also develop the ability to work and analyse independently, to be critical in argumentation and to develop alternative solutions in the form of recommendations. The knowledge and competences acquired will also enable students to develop the ability to apply their knowledge in practice and in concrete workplace situations, such as the preparation of project applications in the context of national and European calls for proposals.
During the course of study, visits to various institutions and visits from practitioners and professors from abroad are organised in individual courses, giving students a first contact with future potential employers, as well as an insight into practical work and situations.

The study programme Political Science - Public Policy and Administration offers students knowledge in the fields of political science, public policy and administration, European studies and some additional knowledge (e.g. law, economics, statistics, foreign languages). Students will further focus and extend their knowledge in other social science fields through elective courses. The acquired knowledge will enable the graduate to work competently in political institutions, non-governmental organisations, public and state administration, local self-government, work in various international and especially European institutions, in the media and in the private sector. Graduates will also be able to think critically and innovatively in solving various social and political problems in an institutional research context (public and private institutes, think tanks) and to formulate various improvements and innovations in different areas of politics, governance and society. For those interested in research, the study will enable them to contribute to the further development of political science and the above-mentioned political science disciplines, either in the context of various research projects or by participating in the work of research institutions.
Our teachers are highly qualified, having received training at home and abroad, participated in research projects and published high-profile works in their field of expertise, and participated as guest lecturers at foreign universities.
Thanks to a number of agreements with foreign universities, students can carry out part of their studies at universities abroad under Erasmus+ mobility or bilateral agreements.
The knowledge and competences listed above are offered to students in the form of interactive work, including the use of modern teaching methods, e.g. project work, group work methods and the use of various technologies, the application of theoretical knowledge to practical examples, thus enabling graduates to acquire competences in public speaking, team work, as well as independent individual work.
The study programme Political Science - Public Policies and Administration is directly linked to the second cycle study programme Political Science - Comparative Public Policies and Administration, and also provides education up to the level of doctoral studies (mainly linked to the doctoral studies at the FFWT in the following fields: political science, policy analysis, public administration). By continuing their studies at the second cycle, students will consolidate the knowledge acquired at the first cycle, further specialise and complement it, and also acquire practical knowledge in the context of a professional internship. The programme has an established tradition of cooperation with potential future employers, such as various political institutions, NGOs, the media and application-oriented analytical units.

Employment and career

Our graduates are employed in both the public and private sectors, for example in political institutions (parliamentary structures, political parties) and civil society organisations (NGOs, advocacy groups, interest groups, trade unions, chambers), in public and state administration (government or government departments, ministries, agencies), in local self-government (municipal structures), in various international, especially European, institutions (European Parliament, European Commission structures, European agencies, European parties, NGOs at EU level), in the media (as journalists, editors, commentators, analysts), and in the institutional research context (public and private institutes, applied-oriented analytical units).

The programme is implemented in Slovene language. Foreign students have the opportunity to be enrolled in Year plus programme that allows them to learn Slovene and fullfil the study obligations in the degree programme parallely.
