Dr. Andraž Petrovčič kot izredni profesor na Fakulteti za družbene vede Univerze v Ljubljani (FDV UL), poleg poučevanja predmetov s področja družboslovne metodologije in podatkovne analitike ter družbenih pojavov na internetu, od leta 2005 tudi aktivno raziskovalno deluje v okviru Centra za družboslovno informatiko (CDI) na FDV UL. Leta 2020 je bil izvoljen v docenta (z nazivom Adjunct Professor) za področje socialne in javne politike s področja internetnega raziskovanja in gerontehnologije na Fakulteti za humanistiko in družbene vede Univerze v Jyväskyli na Finskem. Glavna področja njegovega raziskovalnega dela so (1) večrazsežna analiza socialne opore v osebnih omrežjih posmeznikov kot dejavnika digitalne vključenosti, (2) razumevanje pomena posredne rabe interneta za razvoj digitalnih veščin v dolgoživi družbi, (3) preučevanje uporabniške izkušnje starejših pri interakciji z vmesniki na mobilnih napravah ter (4) analiza posledic in dejavnikov sprejemanja na IKT temelječih storitev za samostojno življenje starejših doma. Kot raziskovalec na CDI je sodeloval v več kot 20 nacionalnih in mednarodnih projektih, ki obravnavajo različne vidike razvoja informacijske družbe v smislu vloge interneta in drugih IKT (storitev) pri aktivnem in zdravem staranju, vsakdanjem življenju ljudi in digitalnih (ne)enakosti. Dr. Petrovčič je sourednik zbornika Interacting with Broadband Society (Peter Lang, 2010) in (so)avtor več poglavij in člankov v uglednih mednarodnih revijah, vključujoč New Media & Society, Computers in Human Behavior, The Information Society, Telematics & Informatics, Telecommunications Policy idr. Je aktiven član uredniškega odbora mednarodne znanstvene revije Human Technology, med letoma 2016 in 2020 je sodeloval v programskem odboru konference Human-Computer Interaction International (HCII). Kot organizator je sodeloval pri izvedbi in vodenju številnih tematskih sekcij, panelov in delavnic na uglednih mednarodnih konferencah, ki so tematsko vezana na področja anketne metodologije, družboslovne informatike in gerontehnologije. Je prejemik Svečane listine mladim visokošolskim učiteljem in visokošolskim sodelavcem za izjemne pedagoške, raziskovalne in umetniške dosežje UL (2016) in nagrade FDV UL za izjemne dosežke na znanstvenoraziskovalnem področju (2019).
